Thank you

Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for all your well wishes and lovely emails this afternoon. Well done to Jan McCarthy who has the honour of being the first parent in Belmayne to reduce me to tears...😄

I have had a fantastic time teaching in Belmayne and it was a very hard decision to decide to leave. Belmayne is a very unique and dynamic place and I will always have many fond memories of my time here. Ultimately though Kerry is home so I am looking forward to the next chapter there.

I have really enjoyed teaching the class this year. They are wonderful, enthusiastic and caring children and I look forward to many fantastic updates about them in the future. I had the honour of getting the first invite to the 2020 graduation from them today which I gladly accepted.

I will hopefully chat(cry)to you before Friday but thanks again for all your help and support this year.

Best wishes,
Denise

Reminder-Extra drinks

As the weather is getting warmer some of the children are drinking all their drinks by little break and are looking for extra drinks. The school lunches provide milk every day if the children wish but many don't want to drink milk. Can you please make sure that all children have a water bottle that they can refill as needed throughout the day. Many children are doing this already. Thanks

Board games

 3rd class are working well during SPHE over the past few Thursdays. They are all being very encouraging and helpful towards each other and are doing well at turn taking. They understand that it is ok to be disappointed if you lose a game but have shown great maturity in how they reacting to this. There have been some healthy debates about the rules in some games but everyone has conducted themselves in a respectful manner. Feel free to bring in games over the coming Thursdays if you wish.

Note
During SPHE for the month of May we are going to be working on turn taking, getting along and conflict resolution. The children can struggle at times to accept when they loose in a game so this is a skill we will be improving. To help with this I am going to do board games weekly with them to allow them to use all the skills they are taught-turn taking, speaking appropriately when they disagree with a team mate, following rules and instructions, persisting when they aren't winning etc. If they wish they may bring in board games for this lesson. Please no electronics and label all games you send in.
Games we already have in  class include cards,frustration, connect 4 and chess.

Thanks-Denise

Before Easter we had a class A.G.M. One of the suggestions was that we should watch more clips and have more I.T. Due to timetabling it is not possible to have laptops daily. However I would like to encourage the enthusiasm that they showed for taking charge of their learning so each week I will be posting a link to a youtube channel for the kids to explore at home if they wish. Each link  is linked to a curricular area.

It is a series that looks closely as some of the animals in the zoo and the role of zookeepers. I won't be showing it other weeks but here is the link to this weeks episode.

Project

Project
Over the next two weeks the children will the working on an individual project based on the theme- Ireland. They will present it on the 13th,14th,15th and 16th of March in school. (Seachtain na Gaeilge) We have discussed it in class and come up with suggestions of topics linked to the theme. These include;
·         Rivers/Mountain of Ireland
·         A county in Ireland
·         A famous Irish building
·         A famous Irish person
·         Irish food
·         Irish sport
·         Irish Music
·         An Irish Legend e.g. Fionn and the Fianna
·         An Irish President
The most important thing is that they pick something that interests them.
Presentation
Each child will decide to present their project in a different way. Some suggestions in class were;
·         Powerpoint
·         SESE hardback.
·         Display folder
·         Poster Paper
·         Model of a building e.g. Malahide Castle

The main thing to remember is;
·         The children understand the content.
·         It is in their own words. (not copied and pasted from a search engine)
·         It is presented neatly if handwritten.

Here are some links to help explore your ideas.

As I say to the class comprehension questions aren’t a memory test- The child can scan back through the chapter if required to help them find an answer. We will review these questions in school also.

If you have a preference as to what day suits best please email me and let me know by Monday January 30th as I will be assigning times next week. I will do my best to accommodate your day of preference. If I don’t receive an email I will take it that you don’t have a preference as to what day you receive. The Butterfly Lion
Over the next 8 weeks we will be reading a class novel. The work we will be doing will cover all strand units of the English curriculum- Reading, writing and oral language.
 The objectives of doing this novel are;
·         Develop confidence and competence at reading fluency.
·         Read for enjoyment.
·         Increase understanding of challenging vocabulary.
·         Become more confident finding words in a dictionary.
·         Improve presentation of written work.
·         Give their thoughts and opinions on a novel.
·         Give their thoughts and opinions on characters in a novel.
·         Answer a range of comprehension questions.
·         Write a character profile.
·         Write a book report.
The children will meet these objectives in class and through nightly homework.
Some children will find aspects of the reading challenging. If you wish you may do shared reading- where you and your child both read together/read every second paragraph. They still will be able to hear the new vocabulary, increase their comprehension skills and read for enjoyment. If the novel is still causing difficulty, please let me know.
